Melemele Island

Iki Town - A Chance Encounter

This village is so small it doesn't even have a Pokémon Center.

This quaint little town is home to those who idolize Tapu Koko, the guardian deity of Melemele Island. As you enter, Professor Kukui catches up with you and tells you to search for the island kahuna who he wants you to meet. You can then freely wander around the town, chatting to the townsfolk both outside and inside their homes.

Once you’ve seen enough, head to the upper part of town, via the short staircase to the north of Kukui. Then exit via the north-east, directly above the ceremonial stage.

Mahalo Trail

Ooh, it’s quite dark near the entrance. Follow the trail north, past the old lady and her Alolan Meowth. When the trail bends from west to east, your trainer will pause for a moment when they catch sight of a girl in a white summer dress heading deeper in. Carry on the way you’re going and follow her through the north exit.

Plank Bridge

A cutscene will play, resulting in the girl’s mysterious Pokémon companion getting trapped in the middle of the plank bridge. Once you’re back in control, approach the girl–Lillie–and you’ll be asked to save her friend. Step onto the bridge and slowly make your way north.

Soon, a wild Spearow will attack you. If you chose Rowlet, attack with Tackle rather than Leafage since Grass-type moves aren’t very effective against the Flying-type Spearow. Once the initial threat is gone, keep following the bridge. Get close enough and a second cutscene will play.

Afterwards, Lillie will properly introduce herself and also give you a Sparkling Stone found lying nearby. Finally, she’ll ask you to escort her back to Iki Town. With no time to waste, exit via the south and you’ll be taken straight back to the upper part of Iki Town.

Back at Iki Town

After that unexpected turn of events, the island kahuna who you sought to find ends up coming to find you anyway. To encourage you on your journey, Kukui hands you a high-tech Pokédex, plus a Trainer Passport to record your achievements. That’s all for today; make your way east and Kukui will take you back home.

Pokémon Refresh

After receiving your first Pokémon, this option will be added to the X button menu. Just like Pokémon Amie in the previous generation of games, you can pet and feed you Pokémon by touching them on the bottom screen. Doing so will increase their affection, but not their Happiness (which determines some evolutions).

Caring for your Pokémon isn’t just fluff though. By boosting affection, you can gain some useful perks in battle like a slight increase to the experience points gained, critical rate, etc. At the end of battle, you can press the Y button to open Pokémon Refresh and use medicine to remove status conditions too.

Your House

The next day, you’ll be enjoying the sunset with your Mom out in the balcony when the doorbell suddenly rings. Head through the open door, back to the living room/entrance. Approach the front door and Professor Kukui will casually let himself in. Apparently there’s something cool he wants to show you.
