Final Fantasy XVI

The White-Winged Wonder Side Quest in FFXVI

By
Ben Chard

There are many Side Quests that will unlock new features in Final Fantasy 16, and one of the more important features is the ability to ride Chocobos. This is a guide for the “White-Winged Wonder” Side Quest and it’ll navigate you through the necessary steps to assist Rowan, the Traveling Trader in the Imperial Province of Rosaria.

The White-Winged Wonder Side Quest will unlock chocobo riding.

Rowan, a merchant based near Martha’s Rest, entreats Clive to come to the aid of a flock of noble chocobos that have attracted the ire of a gang of bandits. Apparently, their leader is a certain “Whiteheart…”

How to Start The White-Winged Wonder Side Quest

Before you can begin the White-Winged Wonder Side Quest you’ll need to progress through the game until you reach and complete the Release Main Quest, which is part of The Gathering Storm Main Quest. You’ll find yourself outside "Martha's Rest" iconMartha’s Rest following the conclusion of this Main Quest and you’ll be prompted to head back to the Hideaway to speak with "Gav" iconGav.

Ignore this, however, and open up your Local Map to spot a new type of Side Quest marker, one indicated with a “+“ icon. Side Quests with this indicator inform you that you’ll be unlocking a new game-related feature, so if there are any Side Quests you should prioritize in Final Fantasy XVI, these are the ones.

Just outside of Martha’s Rest, you’ll find Rowan, Traveling Trader who is in dire need of someone to assist him aiding a group of local chocobos from perilous bandits. The name Whiteheart should also draw your attention, after all, haven’t you seen a white chocobo before?

Head south from !Martha’s Rest to find the missing chocobos.

Where to Find the Hunted Chocobo

Open up your map and you’ll see that the quest marker points you towards the fields to the south after getting off the large bridge leading to Martha’s Rest. Head there, and you’ll find some white chocobo feathers, following some tracks. Follow these all the way to the southwest, near Crooked Nash’s Pier and you’ll find the chocobos cornered by the bandits, you know what follows next.

How to Defeat the Bandits and Huntsman

You’ll be up against two waves of enemies, the first consisting of just "Bandits" iconBandits, and you’ll want to focus your attention on the magic casters first before you turn your attention to the melee based Chocobo Poachers. An "Eikon" iconEikon Ability like "Garuda" iconGaruda’s "Aerial Blast" iconAerial Blast or Phoenix’s "Flames of Rebirth" iconFlames of Rebirth can make short work of these enemies.

Once the second wave enters the fray, you’ll need to deal with a few hounds, but more importantly, the Huntsman. This is an Elite enemy and as such, you’ll need to deal with lowering his will gauge to Stagger him and lay on the pain. The Huntsman is similar to other large humanoids, and his slow axe swings have an obvious tell, making them easy to "Precision Dodge" iconPrecision Dodge through.

(1 of 4) The regular bandits should pose little threat

The tried-and-true tactic of depleting half of the will gauge, then switching to Garuda to pull him to the ground works well here. Use an Ability like "Gouge" iconGouge once he’s on the ground and you can bring him to Stagger easily. This is your chance to then pop "Limit Break" iconLimit Break and unleash your most powerful attacks.

Once the battle is over, you’ll be reunited with "Ambrosia" iconAmbrosia at long last and, after a small gift from Rowan, you’ll gain the ability to ride Ambrosia in any of the open areas! You’ll also obtain 250 Exp, 20 Renown, 60 "Sharp Fang" iconSharp Fangs, and Ambrosia’s Tack, a Curiosity for Clive’s wall back at the Hideaway. You will also unlock the When You Ride Alone Trophy.

How to Ride Chocobos

Now that you have a Chocobo, you can ride them in any of Final Fantasy XVI’s larger regions. Simply hold in the R3 Button (DualSense-R3) and you’ll call Ambrosia to your side. You can then head over to her and climb on top to ride around the areas at a much faster speed than Clive’s regular run.

Press R3 to call your chocobo and ride it around the open fields of !Valisthea.

It’s important to note that you cannot ride Ambrosia everywhere, towns and other settlements being an obvious area where the services of Ambrosia cannot be used. You can also attack enemies while on the back of Ambrosia, simply tap the Square Button (DualSense-ButtonSquare), this is, however, a poor way to deal with any enemy and you’re much better served dismounting.
