Fistful of Steel - FF16 Trophy Unlock Guide

By
Nathan Garvin

There are a number of trophies you can earn in Final Fantasy XVI for demonstrating your expertise with a variety of Eikonic Abilities in combat. One such trophy is Fistful of Steel, which you can unlock by Executing 3 Steel Counters in a single battle (excluding those in the Hall of Virtue). This page will provide tips and strategies for unlocking the Fistful of Steel trophy in Final Fantasy XVI.

To unlock the Fistful of Steel trophy you’ll need to perform three Flash of Steel counters.

How to Get the Odin Eikon in Final Fantasy 16

In order to make use of "Odin" iconOdin’s Eikonic abilities you’ll need to gain Odin’s powers, and since this is the last "Eikon" iconEikon you’ll acquire, you’ll be waiting a long time before you can attempt this trophy. You won’t gain Odin’s power until you complete the main quest The Last King near the very end of the game. After that there are only two main quests where you’re really free to travel and explore - Brotherhood and Back to Their Origin. Fortunately, performing Steel Counters is a function of Odin’s Eikonic Feat, "Arm of Darkness" iconArm of Darkness, so you don’t have to expend an ability points to attempt this. Odin must be equipped, however.

How to Unlock the Fistful of Steel Trophy in Final Fantasy XVI

Once you’ve unlocked Odin and are in a position to put him to use (ideally during the aforementioned main quests Brotherhood or Back to Their Origin, equip Odin and, if you’ve got the ability points to burn and want to play it safe, equip "Will-o'-the-Wykes" iconWill-o’-the-Wykes on one of Odin’s ability slots). This will keep you relatively safe while you fish for parries. When ready, you just need to seek out an enemy durable enough to give you time to perform three parries, ideally one who is also fairly predictable and who uses few ranged attacks.

Our candidate is an Ogre, which is basically a Minotaur reskin. These enemies only perform a handful of attacks - a horizontal swing, a vertical smash and a charge, the first two of which are pretty easy to parry, and the charge can be dodged. No ranged attacks, their attacks are slow, with clear windups, and the beast is durable. Even better, one can be found on some high ground southeast of the Vidargraes obelisk in Waloed - this is the last obelisk you’ll reach before continuing to "Stonhyrr" iconStonhyrr, marking the transition between the main quests Brotherhood and Streets of Madness.

Engage the beast and use Will-o’-the-Wykes to absorb damage - with this up the Ogre is practically incapable of harming you due to how slow its attacks are. Make sure you have Odin equipped and active, and press the DualSense-ButtonCircle button to toggle on Arm of Darkness, which will replace Clive’s weapon with Odin’s blade - the Arm of Darkness icon should glow while this is in effect and Clive’s weapon will be visibly altered. Just keep in mind that if you switch Eikons, you’ll need to reactivate this ability. While Arm of Darkness is active, Clive’s moveset will change a bit - you can check out an in depth page discussing Odin’s Abilities here if you want to know more, but for our purposes all you need to know is that if you perform a parry while Arm of Darkness is active and immediately counterattack afterwards, you’ll perform a Flash of Steel.

You need to do this three times in a single battle (not three times in a row!), and if you’re singled out an Ogre as suggested, you’ll be fighting an enemy with easy to read - and hence, parry - attacks, and plenty of health to withstand incidental damage. If you use Will-o’-the-Wykes, you can botch parry attempts regularly without having to worry about dying. With a little practice you should be able to parry and counter with Flash of Steel regularly.
