Final Fantasy XVI

Back to Their Origin - FF16 Main Quest Walkthrough

By
Nathan Garvin

After your successful assault on Stonhyrr and the destruction of "Drake's Spine" iconDrake’s Spine, you’ll return to "The Hideaway" iconThe Hideaway. Ultima has risen "Origin" iconOrigin - a crystalline structure buried under the Crystalline Dominion - into the now-darkened sky. Not only did the upheaval result in untold devastation, but this looming crystal now serves as an inescapable reminder of the impending doom promised by Ultima. Then final battle looms, and Clive and his allies have to make their final preparations. This page will provide a walkthrough for the main quest Back to Their Origin in Final Fantasy XVI, including a list of new crafting recipes, hunts, and side quests that unlock at this time.

The majority of the main quest “Back to Their !Origin” involves chatting to various characters.

This quest starts as soon as you zone-in to The Hideaway immediately following Streets of Madness. Before you can get to the meat of this quest - which is mostly the side content that unlocks - you’ll need to advance the plot a bit. To do this, head up to The Mess and talk to "Otto" iconOtto to trigger a scene, after which you’ll need to seek out Joshua to provoke more chatter, then finally speak to Jill. At this point the game will drop a silly number of new side quests on you, starting out with the following:

Talk to Otto, Joshua and Jill, then a great number of new side quests will become available.

Some of these quests might not appear until you clear others, and a few can only be obtained by reading letters at the Reading Table in Clive’s Chambers in The Hideaway. Just burn through these side quests and keep an eye out for new green quest icons on the map. Many of these quests are important, lore-wise, as they’re the capstone quests for various characters, effectively resolving their character arcs. The rewards for many of these side quests are also noteworthy, yielding new ability-boosting accessories, the last few signboards you’ll need for the trophy And They Opened Up My Mind, the Renown you’ll need for the last patron rewards (which will score you the Genji Glove and the trophy Careful Whisper), and will cause Jill and Joshua to become your companions for the remainder of this main quest.

Complete these new side quests to unlock the game’s final five hunts.

FF16 Back to Their Origin Walkthrough - New Hunts

While no new hunts initially unlock during Back to Their Origin, completing some of the aforementioned side quests will unlock the final five hunts:

Hunts Unlocks Location
The Grim Reaper Complete Under New Management II The Royal Meadows, Sanbreque
Knight of the Splendent Heart Complete Under New Management II The Penitent’s Gate, Sanbreque
The Wailing Banshee Complete An Inconvenient Truth "Garnick" iconGarnick Village, Waloed
Kuza Beast Encountered during Nobody’s Tool Dalmung Dark, Waloed
The Masterless Marauder Complete Nobody’s Tool Vidagraes, Waloed

Two of these can be found in Sanbreque, three in Waloed. One of the Waloed hunts will be completed during the side quest An Inconvenient Truth. Completing these hunts will earn you more Renown and earn you the trophy Hunter, Hunted.

!Blackthorne offers a few new crafting recipes, including the most powerful stat-stick in the game, !Defender.

FF16 Back to Their Origin Walkthrough - New Crafting Recipes

Last and least, "Blackthorne" iconBlackthorne has three new crafting recipes for you to peruse:

These are the same items you could have purchased from "Goetz" iconGoetz during Streets of Madness, and if you did, you can now upgrade them. The Defender +2 is the most powerful weapon in the game, for some odd reason, while there are arguably superior alternatives to both the Circle of Heaven and the Sun Bracelets. In the former case, the Ouroboros belt you could have crafted earlier (assuming you’ve kept up with your hunts) and in the latter case, The Founder’s Grasp, which you’ll get for completing the side quest Where There’s A Will.

When you’ve completed everything in the game, travel to !Origin to move past the point of no return and onto the game’s final quest.

How to Complete the Main Quest Back to Their Origin in FF16

As you can see, there are plenty of narrative threads to tie up, trophies to complete and a few stat gains to be earned by collecting gear. More substantially, you’ll probably level up two or three times while taking care of all this busywork, which will yield further stat gains. This is the point of no return, so be sure to complete absolutely everything you can to do in this playthrough before moving on.

To complete this quest and head onto the final battle, just open the world map and fast travel to Origin. When you zone in this quest will end and the followup - and final - main quest Of Gods and Men will begin.
