How to Unlock the Rod to Redemption Trophy in FF16

By
Nathan Garvin

There are a number of trophies you can earn in Final Fantasy XVI for demonstrating your expertise with a variety of Eikonic Abilities in combat. The Rod to Redemption trophy is one such accolade you can unlock by satisfying the following condition: “Lure an enemy into striking a Lightning Rod 3 times before it dissipates (excludes battles in the Hall of Virtue).” This page will provide tips and strategies for unlocking this trophy.

Unlock the Ramuh ability tree, then purchase the Lightning Rod ability.

How to Unlock Ramuh and get the Lightning Rod Ability in FF16

First things first, you need to secure access to the "Lightning Rod" iconLightning Rod Eikonic Ability, which requires you to gain the powers of "Ramuh" iconRamuh. This will happen as you advance the main questline, just complete the main quest The Crystal’s Curse and you’ll unlock Ramuh’s ability tree. Lightning Rod costs 120 AP to unlock, and for the purposes of earning this trophy, you don’t need to worry about upgrading or mastering this ability.

(1 of 3) Find a suitably aggressive and durable enemy - Dragoons are prime targets - and lay down a Lightning Rod.

After unlocking and assigning Lightning Rod, you next need to find a suitable target. When used in battle, Lightning Rod “Creates a ball of lightning that, upon being struck, chains lightning to other nearby enemies”. The ability itself doesn’t care whether Clive strikes it or an enemy does - although enemies unleash more damaging chain lightning when they strike the Lightning Rod. This trophy does care, however, as only enemy attacks count towards this. The LIghtning Rod lasts a good amount of time, but you’d still rather have an aggressive enemy that doesn’t dawdle too much between attacks, especially one who tends to aggro Clive and who won’t be killed by the effects of the Lightning Rod or by the actions of your allies. All of these conditions are fulfilled by minibosses, particularly "Dragoon" iconDragoons, but almost anything - "Minotaurs" iconMinotaurs, "Aevis" iconAevis enemies, etc. - should suffice in a pinch.

Dragoons are especially notable targets because they’re almost always guaranteed to focus on Clive and they’ve got nothing but melee attacks, making it a simple enough matter to drop a Lightning Rod and just… stand near it. "Dodge" iconDodge attacks if you can, but the swings and jabs sent your way by Dragoons should trigger Lightning Rod regardless, and when the Dragoon uses its "Jump" iconJump attack, stand near the Lightning Rod until the Dragoon’s Jump reticle appears nearby. Getting a Dragoon to land three hits on a Lightning Rod should be a trivial matter.

The first Dragoon you’ll encounter after you possess the Lightning Rod ability is during the main quest Black Light Burns, and it’s from this enemy that we got our trophy. You can also replay The Kingsfall stage to square off against the Knight of the Dying Sun, if you prefer.
