How to Defeat Water Gym Leader Kofu

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers a guide on how to beat the Water Gym Leader Kofu in Cascarrafa in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. He is part of the main story path Victory Road and you’ll need Pokémon of around level 30 to succeed.

Kofu is the Water Gym Leader.

How to Get to the Cascarrafa Water Gym

The Water Gym is likely the fourth gym you’ll want to take on as you’ll be battling against Level 29-30 Pokémon. The gym can be found in Cascarrafa. To get there, you’ll want to fast travel back to Cortondo (Bug Gym), and follow the road heading west out of the town. This road is windy and will lead you to West Province (Area One). Use the bridges to cross the river. Then once you’ve crossed the river for the second time, follow the road all the way northeast to Cascarrafa.

If you’re interested in finding out about the optimal way to complete this game, head over to our guide on What is the Best Story Order in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

The Water Gym is in Cascarrafa.

Recommended Pokémon for Fighting Gym Leader Kofu

Your Pokémon team should ideally be Level 29 or higher for this battle.

Since you’re fighting at the Water Gym, you’ll want to make-up a team of Pokémon that do well against Water-types. Grass Grass and Electric Electric Pokémon good options because they’ll do x2 damage (super effective).

If you chose the Grass-type starter, your Floragato (1st evolution of Sprigatito) will be a great choice for this battle. However, if you chose the fire starter, Fuecoco, you should avoid bringing it out given that water-types do x2 damage to fire-types!

You should avoid bringing in Pokémon that are weak to Water-type moves, such as Ground Ground, Fire Fire and Rock Rock types. Water-type moves will do x2 times damage to these Pokémon-types so you run the risk of getting one-shot!

Gym Leader Kofu’s Pokémon

Pokémon Level Type
Veluza 29 Water (Water) and Psychic (Psychic)
Wugtrio 29 Water (Water)
"Crabominable" IconCrabominable 30 Fighting (Fighting) and Ice (Ice) with a Water (Water) tera-type.

Veluza

Veluza might throw you off a bit because not only does it have water and psychic moves, it also knows the flying-type move Pluck, which is effective against Grass-types! So try not to bring out a Grass-type during this battle as Veluza will chunk your Pokémon’s health - save your Grass-type for Kofu’s next Pokémon! Consider bringing out an Electric-type to do x2 damage, and Veluza’s psychic, flying and water-type moves also won’t do extra damage. You could also bring out a Pokémon that knows Ghost or Dark-type moves as these do x2 damage to Psychic-types - try not to bring a Bug-type out though as Veluza’s Pluck will do x2 damage!

In addition to knowing Pluck, it also has the Water-type move Aqua Cutter which is a pretty strong move.

Veluza’s move pool might catch you off guard!

Wugtrio

Wugtrio will likely feel a lot easier after Veluza. You can now safely bring out a strong Grass-type Pokémon to deal big damage against the Wugtrio. In addition to water-type moves, it also possesses the Headbutt normal-type attack, which can do a fair bit of damage but thankfully normal moves are not super effective against any other types!

Wugtrio will headbutt with all of its three heads!

Terastallized Crabominable

The "Crabominable" IconCrabominable will come into the battle and immediately be terastallized, turning it into its Water tera-type. It has the normal-type move, Slam, which is quite a powerful attack. And because it is a Water tera-type, it also possesses the move, Chilling Water. Chilling Water is a new Water move where the user showers the target in cold water that saps the target’s power. It also lowers the target’s attack stat.

Terastallized Crabominable.

The best way to deal with Crabominable is to try and get him dealt with before he uses Chilling Water too much and saps all your Pokémon’s power. For example, Floragato was great for this battle because in the battle against Wugtrio it could hone its claws several times, boosting it’s attack stat. Then, the move Bullet Seed, which is a powerful (but risky) grass-type move that can hit anywhere between 1 to 5 times. A vast majority of the time you’ll likely hit 3 times, and if it is able to land 3 hits, you’ll be able to one-shot Crabominable if you’ve used hone claws a few times prior.

Any other Pokémon that is able to boost their attacks will also be useful as a counter to Crabominable’s Chilling Water.

After defeating Crabominable, you’ll earn the Water Badge and you’ll now be able to catch and command Pokémon up to Level 40. Kofu will also give you TM022 Chilling Water.

You’ve completed Cascarrafa Gym!
