How to Breed Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers all the information you’ll need for how to breed Pokémon and hatch eggs in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Breeding Pokémon at a Picnic

In this Pokémon game, breeding works a little differently. In order to breed Pokémon and hatch eggs, you’ll need to use the Picnic system. You can start a Picnic anywhere in the world, except where the terrain is unsuitable (slopes, water) or in cities.

When you successfully breed two Pokémon, you’ll be able to check the basket at the end of the picnic table for eggs!

Keep checking the basket near the picnic table for eggs!

What Pokémon Can you Breed?

Breeding Mechanics in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

In order to actually breed 2 Pokémon, you’ll need to have compatible Pokémon of two different sexes. Compatible Pokémon are Pokémon that are found within the same "Egg Group" iconEgg Group. There are 15 "Egg" iconEgg Groups with several breedable Pokémon in each group.

Head over to our guide on Egg Groups for more information on all the Pokémon found in different Egg Groups!

Gyarados and Hydreigon are both in the Dragon Egg Group so they could make an Egg!

Once you have a male and a female Pokémon from the same Egg Group, start up a Picnic! It’s now a waiting game - it seems to be random how long it takes so you may be here a while! Just keep interacting with the basket at the end of the table to check if there are any eggs.

You can improve your breeding rates by making "Sandwich" iconSandwiches with "Egg Power" iconEgg Power. "Fruit Sandwich" iconFruit Sandwiches and "Peanut Butter Sandwich" iconPeanut Butter Sandwiches can give you Egg Power. You can also purchase food with Egg Power from various shops across Paldea. Check Medali’s wide range of restaurants for food that has Egg Power!

Fruit Sandwiches give you Egg Power, increasing your breeding rates.

How to Hatch a Pokémon Egg

Once you have an Egg, move it from your boxes into your team and start running around! The amount of running around you’ll need to do is dependent on the egg you’re hatching so it could be quick or you might just need to run around for a good while. Luckily, it still works if you’re on your mount so you can go quickly.

Walk around until your egg starts to hatch!
