How to Defeat Normal Gym Leader Larry (Rematch)

By
Vincent Lau

This is a guide for defeating Larry, the Normal Gym Leader, during his rematch in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

How to Rematch Larry

There may be some truth to Larry’s words.

You can rematch Larry after completing the Area Zero story (after seeing the credits roll) and visiting the Director’s Office at Naranja/Uva Academy. Geeta will ask you to visit the eight gyms of Paldea in her place, as part of an inspection. During this time, you can challenge the gym leaders at their full power!

Recommended Pokémon for Larry During His Rematch

Larry still uses Normal types, so we recommend bringing a couple of Fighting types. Plus an Electric type for good measure.

His Pokémon are all Level 65-66, so your Pokémon should be Level 65+ to match.

Here are some suggestions:

  • The Level 75 Tera "Lucario" IconLucario in the underground tunnel at Dalizapa Passage. Can easily handle 3 or 4 of Larry’s team.
  • If playing Scarlet, Koraidon. Larry’s team won’t know what hit them.
  • If playing Scarlet, Sandy Shocks, an Electric and Ground Paradox found in mountainous parts of Area Zero.
  • If playing Violet, Iron Hands, a Fighting and Electric Paradox found all over Area Zero.

What Pokémon does Larry Use During His Rematch?

Pokémon Level Type
Oinkologne 65 Normal Normal
"Komala" IconKomala 65 Normal Normal
"Braviary" IconBraviary 65 Normal Normal FlyingFlying
Dudunsparce 65 Normal Normal
"Staraptor" IconStaraptor 66 Normal Normal Flying Flying (Tera Type: Normal Normal)

Oinkologne

Koraidon’s Collision Course will make mincemeat of Larry’s team.

This time, Larry leads with an Oinkologne. It can use "Body Slam" iconBody Slam for STAB, "Zen Headbutt" iconZen Headbutt to put pressure on Fighting types, "Bullet Seed" iconBullet Seed to poke holes at Rock types and "Iron Head" iconIron Head for additional coverage.

Despite Zen Headbutt, Fighting types are the best. Lucario isn’t too worried about Zen Headbutt either.

Komala

"Komala" IconKomala is back for another round of sleep. It’s got Sucker Punch to try and go first if you’re using an attacking move, while hurting Ghosts, Zen Headbutt to annoy Fighting types, Wood Hammer to wallop Rock types, and Yawn to make your Pokémon fall asleep on the next turn.

This is another job for a Fighting type.

Braviary

Braviary can hit hard with Crush Claw and Brave Bird if you’re not careful.

"Braviary" IconBraviary is another new addition to Larry’s squad. This one can use Crush Claw and "Brave Bird" iconBrave Bird for STAB, "Close Combat" iconClose Combat to pulverize Ice, Rock and Steel types, and "Rock Tomb" iconRock Tomb to deal damage and lower Speed.

Use Electric types if you have any. This will also reduce the chance of taking heavy damage from Brave Bird.

Dudunsparce

Dudunsparce is a returning member. It still has Hyper Drill for STAB and to bypass "Protect" iconProtect etc., "Drill Run" iconDrill Run to break through Rock and Steel types, plus "Stone Edge" iconStone Edge and Dragon Rush for additional coverage. Serene Grace will also make Dragon Rush more likely to flinch your Pokémon.

Yet another job for a solid Fighting type. Lucario won’t like Drill Run, but if it’s high Level enough, it should one-shot Dudunsparce before it can react.

Terastallized Staraptor

Let’s see who explodes first…

As before, Larry will Terastallize his ace, "Staraptor" IconStaraptor. This will change it into a pure Normal type, boosting its Normal type moves and retaining Flying STAB.

For attacks, it’s got "Facade" iconFacade for STAB and Tera-boosted damage, which increases if you inflict a status ailment on Staraptor, Brave Bird for Flying STAB, Close Combat to smash Rock and Steel types, and "Thief" iconThief to tickle Ghost types.

Only Fighting types are super-effective, but of course, you’ll need to be cautious of STAB Brave Bird. Lucario doesn’t mind Brave Bird too much, but Close Combat may be problematic, especially if it’s worn down.
