Mass Outbreak Farming: Shiny Pokémon And XP

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

Mass Outbreak farming comes in handy for two other things bar catching loads of Pokémon; Shiny Pokémon and XP. Gone are the days where trainers need to leave their Pokémon at Daycare using the Masuda Method to find Shiny Pokémon. The same goes for gaining XP from endless battles, well, to an extent. In this guide trainers will learn how to best use Mass Outbreak Farming to grab Shiny Pokémon and that all-important XP.

Time to seek out some Mass Outbreaks!

Mass Outbreak Farming: Shiny Pokémon

Thanks to Mass Outbreak Farming, you’ll have a slightly increased chance of finding Shinies. Mass Outbreaks are gatherings of specific Pokémon that happen across Paldea. During a Mass Outbreak, you’ll be able to battle between 100-120 of the same Pokémon until the mass outbreak disperses.

After around 20 to 30 Pokémon are defeated or captured, you will have an increased chance of 1 additional roll at a chance of being Shiny. After battling or capturing another 20 to 30 Pokémon, you’ll have a total of 2 additional Shiny Rolls. So the shiny rates for Mass Outbreak Farming are as shown below:

Mass Outbreak Bonus Shiny Rate
Standard Shiny rate 1 in 4,096
Mass Outbreak: 30+ Pokémon battled 2 in 4,096 (1 in 2,048)
Mass Outbreak: 60+ Pokémon battled 3 in 4,096 (1 in 1,365.67)

Mass Outbreak Farming And Picnic Shiny Method

This Mass Outbreak Farming method is for the more dedicated players! It involves utilizing the Picnic feature and Mass Outbreaks to try and farm Shinies. It can be a very very time consuming process as it involves opening up a Picnic and resetting the spawned Mass Outbreak Pokémon over and over until you eventually find a Shiny!

You can increase your odds even further by holding a "Shiny Charm" iconShiny Charm or by eating "Sandwich" iconSandwiches that increase your Shiny finding rates! For more information and an in depth guide on shiny rates, head over to our dedicated page on the Picnic Shiny Farming Method.

Mass Outbreak Farming: XP

Mass Outbreaks are a pretty common event that occur across the Paldea region. Multiple outbreaks can happen at once, and to find one, open up your map and look either for a black ? with a shiny background or a Pokémon with a shiny background (see pictures below).

(1 of 2) If you’ve encountered the Pokémon before, its face will show up on the map during a Mass Outbreak

If you’ve encountered the Pokémon before, its face will show up on the map during a Mass Outbreak (left), if its a new Pokémon then it’ll have a question mark on the map. (right)

During Mass Outbreaks, you’ll find a ton of one type of Pokémon in a small area. You’ll be able to farm around 100-120 of the Mass Outbreak Pokémon before the outbreak ends. This allows you to be able to grind out a ton of XP quickly. You can do this either by battling with them or by using the Let’s Go! feature.

Mass Outbreak Farming XP Using Let’s Go! Feature

If you want full XP from the Pokémon during the Mass Outbreak Farming process then you’ll need to engage in good old fashioned battles with them. However, the fastest way to level up using Mass Outbreaks is to throw out your Pokémon using the Let’s Go feature, and letting your Pokémon beat up the Mass Outbreak Pokémon in a matter of seconds. To do this, just throw out your Pokémon and aim them in the general direction of the Mass Outbreak Pokémon and it’ll start battling them without having to go into an actual battle!

You’ll only get half the amount of XP but it’s way quicker than battling each individual Pokémon. The other Pokémon in your party will get half the amount of XP as your lead Pokémon! You could equip a "Lucky Egg" iconLucky Egg held item to your chosen Pokémon and they’ll get even more XP from doing this, making it an even faster way of farming XP using the** Let’s Go** feature!

Mass Outbreaks can happen all across the map so you can XP farm higher level Pokémon if you want!
