How to Defeat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme (Rematch)

By
Vincent Lau

This is a guide for defeating Ryme, the Ghost Gym Leader, during her rematch in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

How to Rematch Ryme

We’ll try our best to match Ryme’s rapping skills.

You can rematch Ryme after completing the Area Zero story (after seeing the credits roll) and visiting the Director’s Office at Naranja/Uva Academy. Geeta will ask you to visit the eight gyms of Paldea in her place, as part of an inspection. During this time, you can challenge the gym leaders at their full power!

Recommended Pokémon for Ryme During Her Rematch

Ryme, the rap queen, still uses Ghost types, so we recommend bringing some Dark types. A Steel and Fairy type could come in handy too.

Her Pokémon are all Level 65-66, so your Pokémon should be Level 65+ to match.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Pretty much any of the Treasures of Ruin, since they’re all Dark types. Chien Pao and Chi-Yu are great if you’re hyper-offensive.
  • Tinkaton, a Fairy and Steel type with a powerful Gigaton Hammer. You could catch a Tinkatuff from North Province Area One and evolve it.
  • Kingambit, a Dark and Steel type. You need to evolve a "Bisharp" IconBisharp by making it defeat 3 Bisharp leading groups of "Pawniard" IconPawniard at the bamboo forest in North Province Area Two.
  • If playing Scarlet, Roaring Moon, a Dragon and Dark Paradox found in the caves of upper Area Zero.
  • If playing Violet, Iron Jugulis, a Dark and Flying Paradox found in Area Zero, near the bottom.

What Pokémon does Ryme Use During Her Rematch?

Pokémon Level Type
"Banette" IconBanette 65 Ghost Ghost
"Mimikyu" IconMimikyu 65 Ghost Ghost Fairy Fairy
"Spiritomb" IconSpiritomb 65 Ghost Ghost Dark Dark
Houndstone 65 Ghost Ghost
"Toxtricity" IconToxtricity 66 Electric Electric Poison Poison (Tera Type: Ghost Ghost)

Banette

Banette and Mimikyu are first in the ring; send out Dark and Steel types to make ’em sing.

Like your first rap battle, Ryme leads with "Banette" IconBanette. It still has Shadow Sneak for STAB and to try and go first, Sucker Punch to also try and go first, but only if you use an attacking move, and "Icy Wind" iconIcy Wind to slow down both of your Pokémon. In addition, it has "Phantom Force" iconPhantom Force to vanish for one turn, then deal STAB damage on the next turn.

Dark types will silence this Ghost with miminal effort.

Mimikyu

At the same time, Ryme will send out "Mimikyu" IconMimikyu. Like before, it has Shadow Sneak for STAB and increased priority, Slash for neutral damage against most foes, and "Light Screen" iconLight Screen to protect its team from special moves. Additionally, it can use "Play Rough" iconPlay Rough for Fairy STAB. Its Disguise ability protects it from one attack; it doesn’t protect against status ailments though.

We suggest banishing Mimikyu with a solid Steel type.

Spiritomb

Sinister Spiritomb is a lil’ hairy; for an easier time, rely on a Fairy.

"Spiritomb" IconSpiritomb is a new addition to Ryme’s rap squad. It can use "Will-O-Wisp" iconWill-O-Wisp to inflict Burn, "Curse" iconCurse to halve its HP and cause persistent damage to one of your Pokémon each turn, Sucker Punch to deal damage with increased priority if you’re using an attacking move (but completely fails otherwise), and "Protect" iconProtect to stall for time, making your Burn and/or Curse damage hurt more.

Against this fiend, you should send out a reliable Fairy type.

Houndstone

Houndstone is ready to groove once more. It’s still got Play Rough to surprise Dark types, "Crunch" iconCrunch for regular STAB, and Phantom Force to disappear for one turn, then deal damage on the next. It has also learned a new trick, "Ice Fang" iconIce Fang, for additional coverage.

Dark types won’t like Play Rough, but they should be able to handle Houndstone all the same.

Terastallized Toxtricity

A shimmering Toxtricity is Ryme’s ace; use a Dark type to launch it into space.

Finally, Ryme will Terastallize her "Toxtricity" IconToxtricity, changing it into a pure Ghost type, giving it STAB in Ghost, Electric and Poison.

For attacks, it has Overdrive and "Hex" iconHex for Electric and Ghost STAB; the latter deals more damage if you were burned by Spiritomb. Plus Boomburst for heavy Normal damage to all Pokémon (even its ally, but its ally is Ghost and thus immune) and "Sludge Bomb" iconSludge Bomb for extra coverage (mainly to smite Fairy types). Its Punk Rock ability will also boost the damage from Boomburst.

A strong Dark type, especially Terastallized, would work wonders here.
