How to get the Shiny Charm in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

By
Ben Chard

This is a guide for obtaining the "Shiny Charm" iconShiny Charm in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. If you’re an avid shiny hunter, you’ll want to use every tool at your disposal to increase your chances and that’s where the Shiny "Charm" iconCharm comes in.

Speak with Mr. Jacq once you have completed the Pokedex to obtain the Shiny Charm.

What is the Shiny Charm

The Shiny Charm existing will come as no surprise to veterans of the Pokémon series, but for those of you newer to the series, or maybe looking into Shiny Hunting for the first time, you may not know about this invaluable tool.

Once obtained, the Shiny Charm is a Key Item that will provide an additional two chances Pokémon to be shiny, increasing the base chance to 3 in 4096 (roughly 1 in 1365). Considering the base chance is 1 in 4096, this makes life a lot easier when Shiny Hunting, especially when you can boost that rate further with methods such as using Shiny Hunting Sandwiches.

Rewards for Completing the Pokédex with Mr. Jacq

As with all Pokémon titles, the Shiny Charm will come from completing the Pokédex. In the case of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, that means capturing all 400 Pokémon so don’t expect this to be something you’ll complete early on in your adventure, this is very much a post-game activity.

Where you turn in your progress is where it gets tricky, because you get rewards for your Pokédex progress from two different places. The first is by accessing the Pokédex and going to the Trophy icon, at which point you’ll be awarded for every 10 entries collected. This is useful, but this is not where you’ll get your Shiny Charm.

If you’ve been attending Mr. Jacq’s Biology Classes at Naranja (Scarlet)/Uva (Violet) Academy, you’ll learn early on that he’s responsible for the creation of the Paldea’s Pokédex.

Head to the Biology lab and you’ll find Mr. Jacq here and after speaking with him, he’ll ask if you can show him your progress and he’ll give you something at specific milestones, this is where you’ll obtain the Shiny Charm. In the table below, you’ll find the full list of rewards that Mr. Jacq will hand out:

100 "Ultra Ball" iconUltra Ball (20)
