How to Find & Catch Miraidon

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page explains how to encounter and catch Miraidon, one of the Legendary Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet. It is a Violet exclusive Paradox Pokémon, with Koraidon being the Scarlet exclusive.

Miraidon is a Paradox Pokémon that’s loosely related to the common Cyclizar.

Near the beginning of your journey, you will encounter and befriend Miraidon and even ride all across Miraidon on it. But you cannot use Miraidon for battling - at least not until the end.

Time to seek out the wild Miraidon in Area Zero.

How to Battle with Miraidon

To enable Miraidon’s battle form, you must complete the Area Zero story, available after completing all three story paths. During the final battle, you will finally get to use Miraidon in its full, frankly overpowered glory.

After the credits roll, you can use Miraidon to fight by going to the Pokémon menu, selecting Miraidon at the very bottom of the list and choosing “Yes”. This will move Miraidon into your Pokémon party. You can only do this if you have space in your party.

If you want a Miraidon to ride on and a Miraidon to batle with, you’ll need to catch yourself another!

Where to Find Another Miraidon

Now you might be thinking a few things. Like is there an easier way to use Miraidon, without having to swap between ride and battle forms all the time?

Plus, if you want to complete the Pokédex, you need to trade for someone else’s Miraidon–but how’s that possible if they can’t trade it, like you can’t trade your Miraidon?

Well, if you finished the Area Zero story, don’t forget there was a second Miraidon!

You can find the second Miraidon at the bottom level of Area Zero, at the end of a slope leading to the back of the Zero Lab. Interact with Miraidon to battle it. Of course, save beforehand, just in case!

Miraidon is found at the bottom of the cave in Area Zero.

How to Catch the Other Miraidon

Pokémon Level Type
Miraidon 72 Electric Electric Dragon Dragon

When you battle Miraidon, it’ll trigger it’s ability, Hadron Engine. The Miraidon will summon "Electric Terrain" iconElectric Terrain for five turns, boosting its Special Attack stat by 30% until the terrain dissipates.

Earlier, you fought Miraidon, but you had your own Miraidon and the fight was heavily scripted. So keep in mind that Miraidon has exceptional stats, since it’s a restricted Legendary (so strong it’s banned from typical tournaments until near the end).

Miraidon knows Electro Drift, "Hyper Beam" iconHyper Beam, "Charge" iconCharge and "Power Gem" iconPower Gem. If it uses Hyperbeam, it’ll do a heap of damage but Miraidon will also need one turn to recharge after using it. Electro Drift, Hyper Beam and Power Gem will all be boosted by Hadron Engine. The Miraidon will also use Charge so that it’s electric move, Electro Drift will do double damage!

(1 of 2) If Miraidon uses Hyperbeam it’ll need to recharge for one turn afterwards.

If Miraidon uses Hyperbeam it’ll need to recharge for one turn afterwards. (left), the only disadvantage to Hyperbeam! (right)

Since it’s an Electric and Dragon type, Miraidon resists:

  • Fire, Water, Grass, Flying Steel and Electric.

Conversely, it’s weak to:

  • Ice, Ground, Dragon and Fairy.

Miraidon, being a Legendary, has a very low catch rate, so you should inflict a status ailment to improve your chances. Paralyze is the lazy, ahem, efficient choice, since it doesn’t disappear–you can apply it with Nuzzle, "Thunder Wave" iconThunder Wave, etc. Meanwhile, Sleep has better odds, but only lasts a few turns–you can apply it with Hypnosis, Yawn, Spore, etc.

Luckily, there are no types that can do x4 damage to Miraidon (unlike Koraidon, who’s extra weak to Fairy types). So you shouldn’t accidentally one-shot it unless your Pokémon are super overlevelled. Miraidon has no way to heal itself, so once you’ve reduced it to low or 1 HP, you can relax a bit. However, Miraidon can inflict heavy damage with its moves, so don’t hesitate to use healing items yourself! If you’re taking big damage, stacking "X Defense" iconX Defense can help reduce the impact.

Electro drift is a pretty nasty ability and can be boosted by Charge to make it even stronger!

When it’s time to start throwing "Poké Ball" iconPoké Balls, "Ultra Ball" iconUltra Balls are great by default. Because you’ve already got a Miraidon, "Repeat Ball" iconRepeat Balls are better. If more than 10 turns have passed, "Timer Ball" iconTimer Balls are the best choice. If Miraidon is asleep, "Dream Ball" iconDream Balls are also great, but those are hard to come by.

Recommended Pokémon for Catching Miraidon

Of course, you can opt to use your own Miraidon. It worked well for the story fight, so it should work well here, right? Only if you bothered to Level Up your ride Miraidon though, because it starts at Level 68 and this one is 72. If it’s Level 72+, you could use it for a bit to rough up its rival.

Any strong Ground-type Pokémon will do well against Miraidon’s electric type moves as they’ll be immune, plus Ground-type moves will do x2 damage to Miraidon. Fairy types and Ice types also fare well against Dragon-types, dealing extra damage. Be careful of its rock-type move, Power Gem, though as this will do x2 damage to Ice types!
