Overview

You’ll drop in on the Sector 5 Slums starting in Chapter 8, where you’ll remain the entire chapter. In Chapter Chapter 9 you’ll move on to Sector 6, which is dominated by Wall Market, and while you can technically return to the Sector 5 Slums in Chapter 8, there’s little reason to do so unless you want to run around the Scrapyard and grind. You’ll again return to the Sector 5 Slums in Chapter 13 and Chapter 14, and in the former case you’ll be able to start new Battle Intel Reports in Chapter 13, Chapter 14 will introduce numerous side quests.

Locations

  • Church: Where Chapter 8 starts. You’ll meet Aerith here, as well as fight Reno. Later on in Chapter 14 you’ll meet Kyrie here during the quest Tomboy Bandit and can collect an herb for the quest Secret Medicine. This area consists of 1F, 2F, 3F and an Attic, and connects to both Sanctuary Way and the Rooftops. You can return to the church after starting the side quests in Chapter 8 to grab an orb of Chakra Materia.

  • Sanctuary Way: Connects the Church (and Rooftops) in the north to the Sector 5 Undercity Station in the south. You’ll encounter Hedgehog Pies here, and in Chapter 14 you’ll also find a wayward Chocobo from the quest Chocobo Search.

  • Sector 5 Undercity Station: The station south of Sanctuary Way, it connects to the Scrapyard (east) and Station Way (south). During your first visit here in Chapter 8 you’ll have to bypass this area and take a detour through the Scrapyard, but later you can return as you wish. You can buy the 21. Cait Sith’s Theme Music Disc from a vending machine, and after returning later in Chapter 8 you can talk to a merchant to obtain 23. the Descendant of Shinobi Music Disc. In Chapter 14 you’ll find Johnny just south of the Sector 5 Undercity Station, who will give you the quest Tomboy Bandit.

  • Scrapyard: This area connects the northern part of the Sector 5 Undercity Station to the southern part of Station Way, allowing you to bypass the majority of Station Way… mostly for plot convenience. This is the primary “dungeon” in Chapter 8, and will retain the same respawning enemies in Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 as well. It consists of several sub-area - Scrapyard Back Alley, Twilight Valley, Steel Mountain, Lookout Point, Nuts ‘n’ Bolts Hills and Slum Public Cemetery - which we’ve all bundled up as merely “the Scrapyard”. In chapter 8 the quests Weapons on a Rampage, Angel of the Slums and Paying Respects will take place - at least in part - here, while in Chapter 14 you’ll have to return to the Scrapyard for the quests Missing Children, Chocobo Search and Corneo’s Secret Stash.

  • Station Way: The road that connects the Sector 5 Undercity Station to the Center District (and the Nuts ‘n’ Bolts Hills part of the Scrapyard), it mostly just serves to connect two more interesting areas. In Chapter 9 you can start the quest Weapons on a Rampage, while in Chapter 14 you’ll be able to start the quests Chocobo Search and Corneo’s Secret Stash in this area.

  • Center District: The main “town” area of Sector 5, here you’ll find most of the quests, NPCs and shops in Chapter 8, and the area will become reasonably lively again in Chapter 14. You can find an item shop, materia shop (from which you can buy the ** 19. Costa del Sol** Music Disc) and weapon/armor shop here, as well as notable locations like Leaf House and the Community Center, in the latter of which you can find the 19. Tango of Tears Music Disc in a jukebox. You can also find Chadley, who will advance your Battle Inteo Reports should you have completed the first four. In Chapter 8 you can start the quests Kids on Patrol, Angel of the Slums and Paying Respects in this area, while in Chapter 14 you’ll be able to start Missing Children and Secret Medicine.

  • Children’s Secret Hideout: East of the Center District, you’ll head here after returning from Aerith’s House. It also connects to the Undeveloped Land areas. You’ll find Moggie here, who runs the Moogle Emporium and Sarah, who oversees the Whack-a-Box minigames in Chapter 8 and Chapter 14. The quests The Mysterious Moogle Merchant and A Verified Hero both take place here in Chapter 8.

  • Undeveloped Land: Consisting of two areas - Specter St. and Toad Marsh - this area is technically where the Whack-a-Box challenges occur. Otherwise you’ll come here in Chapter 8 as part of the story, obliged to rescue some kids. Later the quest Kids on Patrol will take you back here.

  • Petal Lane: An area connecting Aerith’s House (west) to the Central District (east). The only noteworthy thing here is an area where you’ll fight Rude at the end of Chapter 8, and where the quest Malicious Goons culminates in Chapter 14.

  • Aerith’s House: Connected to the Central District via Petal Lane… how did Aerith’s mom manage to score such a prime piece of real estate, anyways? Oh well. You can grab a chunk of MP Up Materia here at the end of Chapter 8, as well as some Pedometer Materia at the start of Chapter 14.

Quests

There are quests in the Sector 5 area in both Chapter 8 and Chapter 14. You can start the Chapter 8 quests after rescuing the kids in the Undeveloped Land, while the Chapter 14 quests can be pursued nearly from the start of the chapter, shortly after the scene with Kyrie. The only thing worth noting is that most quests in Chapter 8 can be started in or immediately around the Central District area, while the quests in Chapter 14 are more spread out, with Malicious Goons actually starts in Wall Market. Only quests started in Sector 5 will be included below.

Battle Intel Reports

Chapter 8 is where you’ll likely unlock most of the Battle Intel Reportss in the game. If you completed Reports 01-04 coming into Chapter 8 you’ll be able to start Reports 05-09 when you reach the Central District in Chapter 8. Chadley moves on to Wall Market in Chapter 9, but you’ll find him in Sector 5 in Chapter 13, where you can pick up Reports #15-20 provided you’ve done the previous ones. That said, Chadley can be found in Sector 5 and Sector 6 (Wall Market) in Chapter 14. How does he manage this? Who knows - don’t question convenience.
