This page details how to complete Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1, so that you can learn the spell in Hogwarts Legacy. This assignment will require you to acquire some specific plants and use them in combat.
How to Unlock Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1
You’ll receive this assignment after completing the main quest ‘In the Shadow of the Undercroft’ main quest. Professor Garlick, the Herbologist, will ask you to do the following:
Where to Get a Mandrake and a Venomous Tentacula
You may be wondering where on earth you get these things? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to harvest any from the school greenhouse so you’ll need to acquire them elsewhere! You’ll actually be able to purchase these plants (or their seeds) from the Dogweed & Deathcap shop. The shop is technically in but it’s easily missable as it’s located north of the main town square area. You’ll need to cross the north bridge and head up to the secluded shop where you’ll find Madame Beatrice Green.
Here, you can either purchase seeds to grow Venomous Tentacula and Mandrake, or you can just buy the plants outright (the easier and cheaper solution). One Mandrake will set you back 500 gold and the Venomous Tentacula will cost 600 gold, so you’ll be spending a total of 1,100 Gold on Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1. If you’re strapped for gold, there’s several eye chests around Hogsmeade that you can locate using . Then to loot them you’ll need to use the Charm (invisibility spell) so the eye doesn’t see you coming. These chests always yield 500 gold! In fact, there’s one inside Dogweed & Deathcap near the window!
Once you have the plants, you’ll need to head out and find some enemies to use them on! There’s a Poacher Camp west of Hogsmeade that’ll do nicely. You need to find multiple enemies as you want to use the Mandrake on them. When you approach the enemies, make sure to stand near at least two of them and then equip and use the mandrake. The noise will temporarily incapacitate them, allowing you to get in some uncontested hits! It’s a perfect opportunity to get in a -Basic Hit combo!
After using the Mandrake, try to find an opportunity to place down the Venomous Tentacula. It’s not a requirement that it’s used in combat, but it’ll sure help you out in this combat (provided you stick around after employing a mandrake on them!).
How to Unlock Wingardium Leviosa Spell
Once you’ve used both plants, you’ll get a notification telling you to head back to the greenhouse to speak with Professor Garlick. Here, she’ll now teach you the Wingardium Leviosa spell. It’s similar to Levioso, but once you cast it, you’ll be able to move around the item you’ve cast it on - a bit like a combination of and Levioso! You’ll be prompted to test out the spell on a crate nearby.
