The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

How to Shield Surf

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

A guide on how to shield surf in Breath of the Wild. Shield Surfing is an often over looked aspect of the game but it’s a super fun mechanic and can be useful in travelling around the mountains.

Shield Surfing Controls

To shield surf, you’ll need to first equip a shield. Then, put up your shield using ZL and then press X to jump then A to flip onto your shield. To actually surf you need to be on some sort of hill.

Once you’re on your shield though, it’s pretty straight forward! Use the movement controls to move around and you can even jump whilst surfing. You can shoot arrows and attack with your melee weapon, but it will slow your surfing down.

Shield surfing is a super helpful way to get down hills fast!

Surfing on certain terrain decreases the durability of your shield, so make sure you don’t use your fancy shields to surf! Snow or sand won’t break your shield but rocky mountains will. And if your shield breaks whilst surfing, you’ll fall flat on your face and take fall damage equal to how far you stumble down the hill.

Selmie’s Shield Surfing Course

If you’d like to learn how to shield surf in the game, you can head over to Selmie’s Spot, found just south of Hebra Peak. She’ll offer you a course for 20 Rupees. It isn’t at all necessary for learning how to surf but it’s a nice way to pass the time!
