You’ll first take to the skies by using Zonai wing devices, and while these are passable enough, their limitations will have you begging for an alternative means of conveyance. Fortunately, you don’t need to go far to find one, and while the Paraglider has its own issues, it’s an essential tool for navigating Hyrule - horizontally and vertically. This page will cover how to find and unlock the Paraglider in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Get the Paraglider in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom¶

To get the Paraglider, you’ll have to do a bit of work, most formidable of which is getting past the game’s incredibly long tutorial section, Great Sky Island. Once you take a dive off Great Sky Island and land on Hyrule proper, this should be your last great leap without the Paraglider… at least the last you’re really incentivized to do.

Once you make land on Hyrule, head northwest to reach Lookout Landing - it’s where the main quest marker directs you to go. When you get there, talk to Purah, after which you’ll be directed north to Hyrule Castle, where you’ll need to talk to a guard captain at a gatehouse, which will require some climbing to do (although you can follow a winding trail until you reach the gatehouse itself). After this, return to Lookout Landing and report to Purah, who will ask you to meet her at the nearby Lookout Landing Skyview Tower. Oblige, and after some more chatting activate a terminal and you’ll get the Paraglider. It’s a good thing, too, as you’ll shortly afterwards be launched into the sky during the Skyview Tower tutorial. Bit of a trial by fire, isn’t it?

How to Use the Paraglider in Tears of the Kingdom¶

Once you have the Paraglider, you can use it any time you find yourself in the air - even jumping will often suffice to prompt you! Just press the any time you’re in the air to deploy the Paraglider and use the and to steer and look, respectively. Keep in mind, however, that the Paraglider drains Stamina when engaged, and if you run out of Stamina when you’re gliding around high above the ground… it could get messy. You can deploy the paraglider many times midair, so if you’re not trying to cover ground horizontally, you can always just avoid deploying the paraglider until you’re near the ground if you just need to mitigate fall damage. To facilitate vertical travel, you can hold to dive while you’re falling.

Between Zonai wing devices and the Paraglider you can potentially cover a great deal of ground, although on its own the Paraglider is best used to glide across small to moderate gaps (if you glide into a cliff face or other climbable surface, you’ll start climbing, so there’s a fair bit of room for error) and to save yourself from falling. Aside from that, using the Paraglider from a wing device that’s about to vanish, after launching from Skyview Tower or while standing in vortexes are all fine ways to propel yourself into the air and cover more ground.
