Riju of Gerudo Town - How to Defend Gerudo Town

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page details how to defend Gerudo Town and how to beat the "Gibdo" iconGibdo invasion during the main quest "Riju" iconRiju of !Gerudo Town in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

If you’ve not already made your way into !Gerudo Town, you can head over to our guide on how to reach Gerudo Town for more information!

Main Story Quest: Riju of Gerudo Town.

Where to Find Chief Riju

After entering into the basement levels of !Gerudo Town, you’ll be required to head back out into the desert to locate Chief Riju. She’s found just northwest of !Gerudo Town, in North Gerudo Ruins. The sandstorm might make it tricky to see but you can use the tornado just outside the entrance into Gerudo to fly up into the air and you’ll be able to spot the ruins from the sky.

Use the wind tornadoes around the desert to fly up, then locate North Gerudo Ruins.

How to Use Riju’s Lightning Power

When you arrive in North Gerudo Ruins, you’ll trigger a cut scene in which you see Riju harnessing lightning against some training dummies. After watching the cut scene, you’ll be prompted to use Riju’s lightning power to your advantage in attacking the Gibdos that have been plaguing Gerudo. Before you can get into that, however, you’ll be tasked with testing out this new attack strategies on a training dummy.

Wait for Riju’s lightning field to spread out and encase the dummy, then equip your arrow and shoot at the dummy. This will cause a huge electrical explosion.

Shoot at the dummy once the lightning field passes over it.

Next, Riju will ask you to repeat this again but this time she’ll tell you to hit three dummies at once. To do this, you’ll want to hit the area in front of the rock found near the middle dummy. This will cause an explosion that hits all three dummies. If you don’t have any arrows, you can find some in some crates nearby.

After hitting the dummies, Riju will get an alert from her guards that Gibdos are attacking Kara Kara Bazaar. It’s likely that you’ve already been to Kara Kara Bazaar before you entered Gerudo Town. If so, then fast travel over to "Mayatat Shrine" iconMayatat Shrine (Map Marker), but if you’ve got no shrine to travel to, head east from North Gerudo Ruins until you find the Bazaar - it’s outside the scope of the sandstorm.

How to Defend Kara Kara Bazaar

When you arrive in Kara Kara Bazaar, you’ll be required to help Riju and the other Gerudo Soldiers defeat the Gibdo. You’ll find that close combat weapons are a bit rubbish against them. Instead, you’ll want to use arrows against them. You can either wait for Riju’s lightning or fuse onto your weapon some fire fruit which also one shots them.

Once you’ve defeated all the initial Gibdos, Riju will indicate that you need to destroy the huge mushroom that the Gibdos are spawning from. To destroy it, you’ll need to wait until Riju’s lightning field covers the mushroom, then shoot an arrow at the glowing pink part of the mushroom when it starts to bulge a bit. After destroying the mushroom, you’ll need to deal with the last remaining Gibdos to finish this part of the quest.

You’ll need to use fire or electric charged arrows to defeat the Gibdo (left), and then destroy the mushroom to stop them from spawning! (right)

How to Defend Gerudo Town

After finishing off the Gibdos in the !Kara Kara Bazaar, you’ll be required to return to !Gerudo Town and speak with Riju in the throne room. She’ll ask you to defend !Gerudo Town from a Gibdos onslaught. Your first task will be to help Teake deploy the soldiers at each of the town gates.

Where Should You Put the Gerudo Troops?

There doesn’t seem to be a right or wrong answer to where you put the different Gerudo Troops. We would put the Spear Troops or Sword Troops at the north gate and then put the cannoneers at one of the side gates (east or west). Cannoneers are good for dealing with Moth Gibdos so remember where you put those as that gate won’t be overwhelmed by Moth Gibdo.

It doesn’t matter too much where you put the troops.

After sorting out the troops arrangements, grab yourself some extra arrows and food if you need them, then head back to the throne room and tell Riju that you’re ready to defend the town. Riju will stand at the steps of the throne room and deploy her lightning field to help in the defense, but it’s important that you don’t let her get overwhelmed because if she gets KO’d then it’s game over and you’ll have to begin again.

When you’re defending the town, only Gibdos will spawn initially and after a few minutes Moth Gibdos will spawn. The latter are the ones you’ll need to worry about as they’ll fly over the town walls and reach Riju way quicker than the normal Gibdos. Luckily Moth Gibdos are also easy to one-shot using fire or lightning charged arrows.

(1 of 2) Use Riju’s lightning to destroy the mushrooms outside of the Gerudo Town gates

Use Riju’s lightning to destroy the mushrooms outside of the Gerudo Town gates (left), and shoot at the Gibdo enemies too. (right)

The best way to deal with this Gibdos attack is to quickly go to each gate and destroy the mushrooms using arrows and shooting at the glowing pink bit when Riju’s lightning passes over them. At each gate you will also want to spend a couple of seconds taking out a few of the Gibdos too, but if you don’t hit the mushrooms they will keep spawning forever.

Once all the mushrooms are destroyed, return back to Riju and defend her as the last remaining Gibdos will (rather terrifyingly) speed at her on all fours. And after all those have been defeated, you’ll speak to Riju in the throne room and she’ll then ask you to meet her in the basement part to discuss the Lightning Temple.
