This quest begins immediately after A Love Betrayed. Now that you’ve learned the whole truth from Cynon, that Modron planned the death of Tewdwr, it’s time to confront her before it’s too late.

Where To Find Modron

You’ll find Modron within a cave system in the Aelfwood, located northwest of Glowecestre. You will find three entrances to this cave system. The central one contains a Book of Knowledge which provides the Feign Death ability, and the westernmost one, locked behind a door which you can find the key for from a nearby Goliath, contains the unique armor piece of Thegn’s Breeches. You will find Modron by entering the system through the northernmost entrance, as shown below, in front of which you’ll find a Goliath with a Tungsten Ingot on them.

You won’t miss the entrance to the cave system where you’ll find Modron, as it’s the largest one. As you draw near, a quest marker will update, confirming that you’re in the right place. Once you’re inside the cave, move the barricade out of the way and continue deeper inside, to the north through a tunnel of cobwebs. After this, you’ll find yourself in a chamber filled with poison clouds. Keep to the left of the chamber as you hop between the rock surfaces and proceed westward through the chamber. Don’t worry if you accidentally fall into the poison cloud, you’ll have plenty of time to get out and there are mushrooms nearby to replenish health.

(1 of 6) You’ll find Aelfwood northwest of Glowecestre.

As you move into the next chamber to the west, you’ll find a bunch of enemies scattered throughout it. Take them out as you continue through the chamber (they’re just regular enemies so shouldn’t pose any challenge), then continue on until you reach a waterfall leading deeper into the cave. Slide down the waterfall into the next chamber, where you’ll begin to hear Modron’s voice. When you approach her, a cutscene will begin, leading to a boss fight.

Boss Fight: Modron

The fight with Modron will be unlike most that you will have experienced so far. This is because she focuses on ranged combat most of the time, unless you catch her and force her into a melee. In ranged combat she uses a light bow, which is capable of inflicting a lot of damage in a short amount of time if you don’t make an effort to avoid the arrows. This can be done relatively easily, but the presence of fire pots scattered around the cave make this a risky strategy. Try to hit her weak points on her torso and left foot during the initial stage, then take a good chunk of her health with a stun attack.

Once you’ve hit both of Modron’s weak points, chase after her and meet her in melee combat. This will force Modron to use her staff by spamming relatively slow red rune aura attacks. You’ll need to dodge or roll out of the way of these, as you won’t be able to block or parry them. If you remain in melee combat for long enough, Modron will eventually set her staff on fire, at which point she will switch from powerful slow blows, to comparatively less powerful but much faster swift blows. You’ll need to dodge and roll multiple times to avoid these, as they occur in quick succession and can be highly damaging if all the strikes land.

(1 of 4) You’ll find weak points on Modron’s torso and left foot.

Once you’ve taken a significant amount of health from Modron, she will likely run away from the fight in an attempt to regain some high ground. She’s much faster than Eivor in general, so she’ll likely get far enough to give her a chance to heal before you can reach her. For this reason it’s important to chase her as soon as she begins to run away, and use your bow to interrupt the healing process, marked by white runs above her head, as soon as you see it. If you get too close to her in the middle of a heal, she’ll immediately retaliate with either a red rune attack, or an orange attack. Although the latter can technically be blocked or parried, she executes them extremely quickly, so you might find it easier to simply dodge or roll out of the way.

So long as you follow the basic principles of engaging Modron in melee combat as soon as you have hit her weak points, avoiding the nearby fire pots in the process, interrupting her heals, evading red rune attacks with dodges or rolls, and parrying or blocking other attacks where possible, you should bring her down fairly quickly. As ever, the Brush with Death and Grit skills will be particularly useful to get you out of a tight spot.

Kill or Spare Modron?

Once you’ve defeated Modron, assuming you allowed Cynon to live during A Love Betrayed, you will have the option to spare her. It doesn’t matter much to the outcome of the story, other than that you deprive Modron’s daughter, Gwenydd, of her mother’s guidance and protection. We spared Modron, as she was only doing what she thought was right to protect her people and her threatened traditions.
