Trial of the Bear - How to Get Highest Mastery Points

How to Get the Gold Medal

Trial of the Bear Objectives

To earn the gold medal for the Trial of the Bear at Wenlocan Outpost, you need to earn the following points for each objective, which amount to the perfect score of 1,000 points combined.

Objective Mastery Points
Fall damage kills 480
Melee kills 360
Kill all the targets 160

This means that you’ll need to prioritise killing as many enemies as possible by fall damage, until the objective is marked as complete and is removed from your active objectives. At this point you can kill every other enemy with regular light and heavy attacks. If you find yourself in a sticky situation due to being overwhelmed by enemies as you’re trying to get in an appropriate position to cause fall damage, you can kill a few with regular attacks or reduce their health, before moving to another part of the outpost for some breathing space.

How to Get Fall Damage Kills

Trial of the Bear Special Ability - Kick of Tyr

The only special ability available to you during this trial is Kick of Tyr, which will help you to achieve the objective of fall damage kills. You’ll need to use it strategically by reserving it for enemies which are positioned close to the edge of a platform, with enough of a fall to kill them when you use the ability and kick them off. Your main source of replenishing adrenaline, which will allow you to use the special ability, will be from consuming mushrooms which are scattered throughout the outpost. Alternatively, you can kill a few enemies with regular hits to replenish your adrenaline, but you should only do these once all of the mushrooms have been consumed, so that you still have enough enemies left to kill with fall damage by using Kick of Tyr.

Use Platforms for Fall Damage Kills

If you’re completely out of adrenaline and still need to kill some enemies by fall damage, your best chance is to goad a few enemies to follow you near the edge of a platform, then hit them with a heavy attack to knock them back and, hopefully, off the ledge. Keep in mind that you’ll need to do this with enemies who have enough health to survive the initial heavy attack, to ensure that they technically die from the fall.

Kill, Block, and Parry to Restore Health

Once you’ve killed enough enemies by fall damage, the objective will be marked as complete and will disappear from your active objectives. At this point you can kill enemies in whatever way you see fit, so long as it involves melee kills. This is a good opportunity to restore health if you lost a significant amount while aiming for fall damage kills, as each kill from here will restore some health. As mentioned in the above tip, you can also try consistently blocking and parrying to restore some health if you’re low.

Enemy Types - Cutthroats and Goliath

Most of the enemies that you’ll encounter at the outpost will be regular cutthroats, each of which have the ability to throw dirt in your eyes to disorient you. If this happens, you should dodge and get out of the dirt cloud as soon as possible to avoid being hit multiple times from different directions. The only other mob you’ll need to contend with is a Goliath. You won’t be able to kill the Goliath with just one Kick of Tyr if they have full health, so try bringing their health down below the halfway mark with a few light and heavy attacks, then use Kick of Tyr to finish them off.

Keep Moving and Use Walls for Cover

So long as you keep moving throughout the outpost and make use of the outer walls if you find yourself in a sticky spot, you should be fine once you’ve killed enough enemies with fall damage. The main thing to remember is to prioritise using Kick of Tyr to send enemies flying from the platforms, and remain on the platforms while you wait for enemies to come to you. You’ll need to keep moving while you’re on the platform, as one hit from an arrow could poison you. Without rations, this could be a death sentence, so if this does happen you should quickly try to block and parry as many incoming attacks as possible to restore health.

Once you’ve killed all the enemies in the specified ways according to the objectives, the trial will complete.

(1 of 5) You’ll have an overview of objectives, gear, and special abilities at the beginning of the trial. Be sure to check the runes on the gear and make use of them.
